Kona Community Hospital staff turned out in force to support the 16th annual Lavaman Waikoloa Expo and Triathlon, which was held from March 22—24. The Waikoloa swim, run, bike event attracted more than 1400 entrants, some participating on three-person relay teams, others going solo for all three legs.

Kona Community Hospital (KCH) welcomed a new emergency medical rotor coptor as it made its maiden landing on the hospital’s helipad on Thursday, February 14. The Hawaii Life Flight (HLF) crew manning the rotor copter was greeted by KCH administration as well as members of the KCH trauma team, emergency and security departments.
On Friday, January 25, The Kona Hospital Foundation received a generous donation from the Pediatric Hydrocephalus Foundation. The donation check in the amount of $1000 was presented by Christian Tremaine, who was diagnosed with hydrocephalus shortly after his birth at Kona Community Hospital (KCH), and will be earmarked for the hospital’s obstetrics department.
Christain’s mother, Shaurell Tremain says that he was born prematurely at 6 months and weighed less than three pounds. He was transferred quickly from KCH to Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children where he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a lifelong condition that causes fluid to accumulate on the brain.
On January 9th, Kona Community and Kohala Hospitals received the Award of Community Excellence from The Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii in recognition of their recently adopted smoke and tobacco-free campus policies. Both campuses, which comprise the West Hawaii Region of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, became smoke and tobacco-free effective January 1, 2013.
Kona Community and Kohala Hospitals launched their smoke and tobacco-free initiative last week in conjunction with the Great American Smokeout. This was an opportunity for both facilities to communicate to employees and the public that they will become smoke and tobacco-free campuses beginning January 1, 2013.

Beginning on August 27th, approximately 100 medical, hospital and IT professionals will descend on the Kona community for a month-long integrated test of the Hawaii Health System Corporation’s (HHSC) new electronic medical records (EMR) system. Kona Community Hospital will be hosting this
