JOB TITLE: Health Unit Coordinator I or II

JOB LOCATION: KONA COMMUNITY HOSPITAL – Women’s Health Services
SALARY RANGE: HUC I: $3,484/month (SR11; BU03) or HUC II: $3,768/month (SR13; BU03)
JOB DUTIES: This position is part of the nursing team who performs clerical duties and works together with the RPN III Charge Nurse and Nurse Manager to see that unit activities are coordinated effectively, patient charges are completed in a timely manner, unit supplies are ordered and stocked, monthly reporting is completed and assists with any other assigned projects. This position may be required to work shifts, weekends, and holidays.
MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK SHIFTS AS NECESSARY BASED ON HOSPITAL OPERATIONS; SERVICES ARE PROVIDED 24/7.
THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.
EDUCATION:
- Graduation from High School or GED certificate preferred
EXPERIENCE:
- General Clerical Experience: Two years of work experience which involved the performance of a variety of clerical tasks such as typing, substantive clerical work, or any combination of these experience which duties demonstrated knowledge of English grammar, spelling, arithmetic, common office appliances and equipment such as copiers, fax machines, telephones and computers. Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Must demonstrate the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, carry out procedures in clerical work systems, communicate effectively orally and in writing, deal tactfully with others, and organize and prioritize work tasks.
- Specialized Experience: (for HUC II) One year of work experience in a health care setting which involved working with healthcare professionals such as physicians and/or nurses and receiving, coordinating, expediting and/or implementing their patient care orders, inputting data into a computer system, preparing and maintaining medical records, and/or work experience in an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system or similar application. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology through the application of such knowledge to work assignments.

- Ability to manage multiple priorities amid numerous interruptions and recognize and respond to priorities in the patient care process. Ability to work proficiently in crisis and emergency situations. Knowledge of medical terminology which facilitates effective communication between staff, patients and family.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read (without strain) printed and on-screen material the size of typewritten characters (glasses permitted); and the ability to hear the conversational voice with or without a hearing aid; or the ability to compensate satisfactorily. Applicant should be physically capable of lifting up to thirty pounds, reaching, sitting at a desk for extended periods of time and ambulating as the job requires.
Applicant must be aware of the hazards of working within a medical environment and understand the risks associated with possible exposure to bodily fluids, contagions, and other safety issues. Applicant must be able to properly wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
All applicants must possess emotional and mental stability appropriate to the job duties, responsibilities and working conditions. Applicants must be flexible to work to the needs of the department, including rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.

MERIT OR CIVIL SERVICE SYSTEM: Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirements, including education, experience, other public employment requirements for State Civil Service employment, and HHSC Standards of Fitness. STEPS TO AN ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW, SUBSEQUENT APPEALS: If you do not agree with a decision made by the Employment Office as to your non-qualification or non-selection for a position, you may complete a Request for Administrative Review form (available on the HHSC website) or you may submit a written request within twenty (20) days from the date of your sent notice to the Regional Chief Executive Officer/Designee. Your letter requesting the Administrative Review must include 1. The job title(s) and recruitment number(s), 2. the specific reason(s) you are requesting the review noting if there is a statute or rule violation, and 3. any additional information you want to submit to substantiate your request. If you do not submit your request within the twenty (20) days deadline, no Administrative Review will be conducted. Since the Administrative Review is a prerequisite to subsequent steps, failure to utilize this process will make you ineligible for subsequent appeals. The administrative review, formal complaint and/or appeals hearing will not necessarily postpone the recruitment process and/or rescind a selection.
