Curriculum & Program Overview

Clinical & Graduation Requirements:

Clinical student must complete a minimum of 120 cases in the first scrub role to graduate.

The student must complete a minimum of 30 cases in General Surgery:

20 must be performed in the first scrub role. The other 10 can be performed in either the first or second role.

The student must complete a minimum of 90 cases in various surgical specialties, excluding General surgery.  60 of these cases must be in the first scrub role and distributed among a minimum four surgical specialties.

The goal of the surgical rotation is to contribute to the development of an organized, well-rounded, entry –level surgical technologist. To apply the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains from the classroom to the clinical setting.

Clinical Rotations:

Surgical rotation is a requirement for graduation from Kona Community Hospital Surgical Technology Program. The first part of the program is skills development in classroom and lab. After passing classroom/laboratory practical exam each student will be placed in a clinical rotation. This will involve pulling surgical cases, scrubbing, and gowning, gloving, setting up the operating room, sterile environment and scrubbing into surgical cases. The clinical student will be involved in surgical cases with the assistance of a preceptor. All students will be involved in patient care; preoperatively, intraoperatively, postoperatively.

Students will be rotating through several clinical sites. Other sites may be added in the future.
